“The advent of wireless technology has made it possible for mobile health care professionals to access patient records, test results and other critical information from the field…a growing number of clinicians are travelling to patient’s homes, which requires remote connectivity to improve communications and keep patients records up to date. The Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) has unique and very challenging mobile technology requirements and NetMotion’s mobile VPN, Mobility XE, is able to weave together computing hardware, supporting medical applications and the security mandated by HIPAA. VNSNY found that the NetMotion mobile VPN solution closed the connectivity gap allowing clinicians to roam across multiple networks without user intervention or calls to IT.” Read the full story here.

Best Practices in Mobile Data Communication
"ln the case of OCSD (Orange County Sheriff's Department), we found the best option to solve our wireless and connectivity challenges was to install specialized mobile virtual private network (VPN ) software on our officers laptops and our back-end servers. In our case, we chose Mobility XE Mobile VPN software from NetMotion Wireless because its solution is widely used by hundreds of law enforcement and public safety agencies around the country. With this software, if an officer's laptop should lose wireless network connectivity, the mobile VPN server software manages and maintains the applications and connections on the back end, with the client software holding the applications in place on the device until a network connection can be restored. Once restored, the client and server software resume the application sessions."

"Recently, new types of VPNs have been emerging. 'One area gaining attention recently is mobile VPNs,' noted John Girard, vice president at Gartner. In some cases, IPsec and SSL do not work well with mobile devices, such as cell phones and PDAs. Consequently, vendors, such as NetMotion, have designed mobile VPNs that try to address issues found on wireless networks, such as goverage gaps, roaming and performance problems." "Randy Cleghorne, CTO for the VNSNY, set out in search of a solution that would provide ubiquitous connectivity, maintain HIPAA compliant security and, as large as VNSNY is, accommodate a limited budget. Most IT experts, including some on her own staff, said Ms. Cleghorne should settle for two out of those three. Not the type to settle, she embarked on a nationwide search until she found Seattle-based NetMotion Wireless, with a mobile VPN product it has dubbed Mobility XE(tm). The technology company had been addressing the problems of environments like VNSNY's and come up with a way, not to prevent connectivity crashes but to enable databases to survive them."
