Reason 69: "The Client Session No Longer Exists"

Technical Note 1486

Last Reviewed 11-Jul-2005
Applies To

NetMotion Mobility Client, version 1.0 through 6.01
 Printer-friendly version

Summary

If you will be using a cloning method (such as Norton Ghost or Veritas WinINSTALL) to deploy NetMotion Mobility Client to mobile devices, make sure that the unique Mobility permanent identification number (PID) is not cloned. This technical note explains what the PID is and explains the steps required to delete the PID number.

About the Permanent Identification Number (PID)

The first time a Mobility client connects to a Mobility server, the server registers the mobile device and assigns it a unique permanent identification number (PID), which the client uses for all subsequent connections. This identification number is stored in the client system registry.

The PID number must be unique because duplicate PIDs cause sessions to disconnect. For further information about disconnects caused by duplicate PID numbers, see Technical Note 1487.

To avoid creating duplicate PID numbers when cloning a NetMotion Mobility Client installation, do not connect to the Mobility server from the PC where the clone images are created. Or, if you need to connect to the Mobility server to test the clone images, delete the PID number before using the clone image to deploy the Mobility client.

Deleting the PID Number from the Windows Registry

If you connected to the NetMotion Mobility Server while creating the clone images, you can edit the Windows Registry to delete the PID number before using the clone images to deploy Mobility client.

Caution: Proceed with extreme caution when editing the Windows Registry. For full warning information regarding editing the Windows Registry, see Microsoft Article Q256986 at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q256/9/86.ASP.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP

Using RegEdit, delete the binary value "PID" stored under the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetMotion\Mobility Client

After exiting the editor, restart the system.

Windows CE

Using a third-party registry editing tool (see Technical Note 2115: Registry Editors for Windows CE), delete the binary value "PID" stored under the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NetMotion\Mobility Client

After completing this change, restart the device.

Windows 98

(Mobility version 6.01 and lower.) Using RegEdit, delete the binary value "PID" stored under the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NetMotion\Mobility Client

After exiting the editor, restart the system.
