Restoring the Mobility XE Server and Warehouse From a Disk Image

Technical Note 2178

 Printer-friendly version

Summary

There are two options for restoring the Mobility server, and two for restoring the Mobility warehouse. Read through both before deciding which one to use for which component.

Mobility Server

There are two options for restoring the Mobility server when you have to also restore the operating system for the machine.

1. Restore OS and Mobility Server Together

When the base OS and the Mobility server are restored simultaneously, the server can rejoin the pool with its PID and custom settings intact.

2. Restore OS and Manually Reinstall Mobility Server

When the base OS is restored and you manually reinstall the Mobility server, the server has a new PID and is—for all intents and purposes—a new server in your pool. You will have to manually reconfigure any Mobility server settings that are unique to the server (for example, a pool of virtual IP addresses). You'll also need to remove the old instance of the server: on the Server Status page in the Mobility Console, click Details and then Remove at the bottom of the page.

Mobility Warehouse

There are two options for restoring the Mobility warehouse that are explained in detail below. Mobility provides a command line tool called Nmwdump.exe that you can use to export an LDIF file from your standby or primary warehouse; see tech note 2135 for details.

1. Restore OS and Mobility Warehouse Together

  • If the restored warehouse is a standby warehouse, you may need to reinitialize the replication agreement with the primary warehouse after the system restore.

  • If the restored warehouse is a primary warehouse, you'll want to take some precautions to prevent the restored primary warehouse from overwriting the more recent settings on the standby warehouse:

    1. Before restoring the primary warehouse, export the Mobility settings from the standby warehouse into an LDIF file using Nmwdump.exe.

    2. Remove the replication agreement from the standby warehouse.

    3. Restore the primary warehouse.

    4. Import the saved LDIF file into the primary warehouse.

    5. Recreate the replication agreement with the standby warehouse.

2. Restore OS and Manually Reinstall the Warehouse

  • If the restored server is a standby warehouse, you can just reinstall the warehouse and recreate the replication agreement with the primary warehouse.

  • If the restored server is a primary warehouse, follow this procedure:

    1. Export the Mobility settings from the standby warehouse into an LDIF file using Nmwdump.exe.

    2. Remove the replication agreement from the standby warehouse.

    3. Restore/reinstall the primary warehouse.

    4. Import the saved LDIF file into the primary warehouse.

    5. Recreate the replication agreement with the standby warehouse. (For Sun Directory Server 6.3, uninstall your standby warehouse and re-install it since replication is setup during the install phase).

Collocated Mobility Server and Mobility Warehouse

The same options as above apply to collocated Mobility servers and warehouses.
