Bluescreen or Continuous Reboot After Installing Mobility Client
Technical Note 2180
Last Reviewed 08-Jun-2007
Applies to:
Mobility XE Client 6.01 through 6.50
Windows XP Service Pack 2
Printer-friendly version
Summary
If you have a new laptop on which Data Execution Protection (DEP) is enabled, you may see problems booting when the Mobility XE client is installed. There are a few approaches to working around this problem:
Upgrade to Mobility version 6.61 or higher.
Disable DEP before installing the Windows service pack.
If you've already installed the Windows service pack and are having problems, edit Boot.ini.
About Microsoft Data Execution Protection
Data execution prevention (DEP) is a set of hardware and software technologies that perform additional checks on memory to help protect against malicious code exploits. In Windows XP SP2, DEP is enforced by both the hardware and software and is set to be enabled by default. This is the equivalent of putting a /noexecute switch in the boot.ini file.
For more information on DEP, see this document on the Microsoft site: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2mempr.mspx
Disabling Data Encryption Protection
You should disable DEP before installing service pack 2, or before installing Mobility on a machine with the service pack already installed. Follow the instructions below for disabling DEP.
If you have already installed SP2 and the Mobility XE client on the same machine and are experiencing problems (for example, a blue screen), boot the machine into Safe Mode, then follow the instructions below for disabling DEP. You should not have to uninstall the Mobility client or SP2 to correct the problem.
Open the System Properties by selecting System in the Control Panel.
In the System Properties dialog box, go to the Advanced tab and click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery.
Click Edit to modify the Boot.ini file in Notepad.
In the [operating systems] section of Boot.ini you'll see a line that looks like this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin
Add the /execute DEP boot parameter to this line (any /noexecute option in the line should be replaced by /execute). The line in Boot.ini should now look like this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /execute
Reboot the computer.
