Moving Hardware While Upgrading from Mobility XE Version 6.x to 7.00

Technical Note 2207

Last Reviewed 26-Jul-2006
Applies to:
Mobility XE server version 6.00 and higher
 Printer-friendly version

Summary

This technical note addresses the situation where the Mobility server and warehouse are being moved to new hardware, often (though not always) as the result of an upgrade. If you want to preserve the settings stored in your old warehouse you must perform the following steps carefully, in the order they are given.

(Note: In this scenario, both old and new machines need to be in the same domain. If you are moving domains as well as hardware, please contact technical support for additional assistance.)

Migrating Warehouse Settings

  1. Important: See technical note 2206 for important information about upgrading from Mobility XE version 6.00 and higher.

  2. Important: See the version 7.00 readme for a description of known issues with this release.

  3. On the new machine, run Setup and select Warehouse Only.

  4. On the old machine, open the Sun ONE Directory Server console (on the Start menu, click Programs, Sun ONE Server Products, Sun ONE Server Console 5.2), and log on with the user ID and password created during warehouse setup. The default user ID is admin.

  5. On the Servers and Applications tab, expand the tree until you see the Directory Server listing. Select your server, then click Open.

  6. On the Tasks tab, click the Export to LDIF button. Name the file export.LDIF and use the Browse button to save it to a known location.

  7. Copy the exports.LDIF file from the old machine to the new machine. The new location is not important as long as you know where to find it.

  8. Copy the 99user.LDIF file (typically located in C:\Program Files\Sun\MPS\slapd-‹servername›\config\schema) from the old machine to the same location on the new machine.

  9. Be sure to do this before Step 10. On the new machine, follow steps 4 and 5 above to open the Sun ONE Directory Server console and bring up the Tasks tab. Click the Stop Directory Server button. After the directory server has stopped, click the Start Directory Server button.

  10. On the Tasks tab, click the Import from LDIF button. Use the Browse button to locate the export.LDIF file, and then click OK. You may see a few errors during the import but most settings should import successfully.

  11. After the import has finished, click on the Directory tab. Expand the o=NetMotion tree and then the NMWRoot tree. Highlight the NMWServerPool entry. In the right-hand pane you should see a purple dot with a long string of letters and numbers next to it. Right-click on the dot and select Delete from the pop-up menu. If there is more than one purple dot, repeat the process until they have all been removed. (Note: Do not delete anything other than the purple dots.)

  12. On the new machine, run Setup and select Server Only. After installation has completed and the machine has been rebooted, open the Mobility console and verify you can see your old user and device settings. Note: Global settings will not have been migrated.
