Conflict when running the TotalRoam service and starting the Route Server automatically when the TotalRoam Management Console starts

ID Number: 10101 Title: Conflict when running the TotalRoam service and starting the Route Server automatically when the TotalRoam Management Console starts

Summary

The TotalRoam Management Console does not prevent administrators from configuring the TotalRoam Mangement Console to automatically start the Route Server when TotalRoam is run as a service.  This can cause unexpected results when closing the TotalRoam Management Console.

Symptoms

TotalRoam stops passing traffic once the TotalRoam Management Console is shut down, even when the TotalRoam service is running.

Cause

TotalRoam’s Router Server (TrRouter.exe) can be started in the following three ways:

  • When the TotalRoam service is started, either automatically or manually.
  • When Tools | Route Server is selected in the TotalRoam Management Console.
  • When the TotalRoam Management Console is started and the “Automatically Start the Route Server” option is enabled under Configure | System Startup in the TotalRoam Management Console.

When the TotalRoam Management Console is stopped with the “Automatically Start the Route Server” option enabled, it stops the Route Server regardless of the state of the TotalRoam service.

Resolution

When using the TotalRoam service, ensure that the “Automatically Start the Route Server” option in the TotalRoam Management Console is not enabled.
