Title: Consideration when choosing ports for transport adapters |
| |
|
Summary:
Service providers, especially wireless providers, are more
frequently blocking traffic based on destination port. This
article explains what you should consider when choosing ports
used for transport adapters.
Details:
Any standard port number can be used as either the Local Port
or the Gateway port for transport adapters in the TotalRoam
Client. However, because service providers may block traffic
by destination port, you should use Echo Test to confirm that
the port(s) you plan to use will not be blocked.
Also note that the default Local Port for TotalRoam Client
transport adapters is 0. That means that TotalRoam will use
an ephemeral port given to it by Windows as the source port
of the VPN tunnel. If Windows gives TotalRoam a port that
is blocked by your service provider, the Gateway will receive
key exchange packets, but the acknowledgements it sends will
not reach the Client. To guarantee that TotalRoam does not
use a port blocked by your service provider, set the Local
Port on your transport adapters to a port that is known to
work. In general, it's a good idea to set it to the match
the port used in the IP/Port Gateway setting.
